The H termination and surface reconstruction of (100) samples which had been annealed at high temperatures in a 1bar H2 atmosphere was investigated by using multiple internal reflection infra-red spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the surface flattened, became 2 x 1 reconstructed and was terminated by strained monohydrides. Such surfaces were shown to be very stable with respect to contamination and oxidation.
