Scanning tunnelling microscopy was used to investigate structural modifications, of a chlorinated (111)-(7 x 7) surface, which were produced by 266nm laser irradiation. At a fluence of 0.7mJ/cm2, where thermal desorption could be ignored, a periodic striped pattern was observed along the [110]-type directions of the (111) surface. This pattern consisted of flat terraces and narrow grooves which were about 6 and 10nm in width, respectively.
