A (111) (22 x 3)-like reconstruction was observed by means of atomic force microscopy, with lateral force detection, in air. On the flat terraces of Au which was evaporated onto mica, there were reconstructed patterns as well as atomic lattice images. It was found that the lateral force varied across the reconstructed pattern, and signs of an increased lateral force was detected at the so-called elbow sites of the reconstruction.
