Experimental and theoretical studies were made of H diffusion on metal surfaces. The experimental system was that of H on (111) Pd, and the use of low-energy electron diffraction (combined with electron stimulation of the surface by the incident beam) for the investigation of surface diffusion was described. Electron-stimulated desorption and disordering were considered when interpreting the results. In order to study theoretical aspects of surface diffusion, variational transition-state theory was used. The system which was studied by means of this technique was that of H on (111) Ni.
