Field-ion microscopic observations showed that Pt atoms diffused on (001) via an adatom-substrate atom replacement mechanism. The tendency to adatom-substrate atom exchange was found to be related to the amount of adatom-induced substrate relaxation. On the basis of measurements performed at 265K, the activation energy for the surface diffusion of Pt was estimated to be equal to 0.47eV.
