An investigation was made of the (110) surface by using He atom scattering methods. It was shown that the 1 x 2 deconstruction transition at 1087K fell into the 2-dimensional Ising universality class, with antiphase domain walls proliferating mainly along the [001] direction. Surface roughening was detected at 1160K, due to a power-law broadening of the antiphase diffraction peak along the [001] direction. The 2 phase transitions limited the temperature range within which the surface was disordered but was still confined to a common height level.
