The results of  in situ  X-ray scattering studies of a Pt (110) electrode showed that a stable (1 x 2) reconstruction existed over a wide range of electrode potentials, and that the uppermost rows of Pt atoms extended into the electrolyte. Additional expansion occurred during the potential-induced adsorption of H atoms. It was expected that the presence and stability of such a (1 x 2) reconstruction would have a large influence upon some of the surface reactions which occurred in the electrolyte.
