The energies of Σ = 11 [110] asymmetrical tilt boundaries, with a misorientation of 50.5º, were determined experimentally – using a silica-particle method - for inclination angles ranging from 0 to 90º. This method avoided the drawbacks of the boundary-grooving and triple-junction methods. Three deep cusps existed at 10, 64.8 and 90º, in the boundary-energy versus inclination angle diagram, and a shallow cusp appeared at 35.3º. The inclination-angle dependence of the boundary energy was used to analyse the faceting of the boundary. Reported observations of the faceting of Σ = 11 [110] tilt boundaries in face-centered cubic metals were quantitatively accounted for by using the present analysis.
