It was recalled that AlN and Al2OC were isostructural. The AlN-Al2OC system formed homogeneous solid solutions above 1950C. Interdiffusion was studied in the solid-solution regime in order to clarify differences in the kinetics of phase separation when samples were annealed at lower temperatures. The diffusion couples, (AlN)0.7(Al2OC)0.3 /(AlN)0.3(Al2OC)0.7, were prepared by hot pressing and were annealed at 2273K. It was found that the interdiffusion coefficients in this system were much larger than those in the SiC-AlN system.
