It was found that Zn-induced mixing mainly affected the cation sub-lattice of the superlattice and was consistent with a so-called interstitial kick-out mechanism. The Zn-diffused superlattice remained sharply defined. The absence of strain-related growth defects in the un-strained starting material permitted the formation of a high-quality strained-layer superlattice by mixing.
