High-resolution transmission electron microscopic images of stacking faults on the (001) and (¯101) planes of a -phase whisker were obtained and were compared with image simulations. This revealed that the structure of the 4 atomic planes around the (001) stacking fault plane was very similar to that of the unit cell of the -phase. The stacking fault climbed under electron irradiation in the microscope.
