One-dimensional diffusion of Pt adatoms within the missing-row troughs of the (1 x 2) reconstructed (110) surface was monitored directly by using atomic-resolution time-lapse scanning tunnelling microscopy. It was found that not only jumps between nearest-neighbor sites, but also long jumps (between next-nearest neighbor sites), were involved. The hopping rate for the long jumps was found to obey an Arrhenius dependence, with a diffusional activation energy of 0.89eV. This was slightly larger than that (0.81eV) for single jumps.
