Experiments were performed with the aim of determining precise values of the lattice parameters and, in connection with this, a study was made of the existence of stacking faults in austenite. It was concluded that more reliable lattice parameters could be obtained by using an extrapolation procedure. The latter could reveal the existence of stacking faults in high-C austenite. The stacking fault densities were quite high after 300s to 0.5h of austempering at 360C. They essentially vanished after 1.5h. The stacking faults were expected to impair the ductility, and it was therefore that an austempering time be chosen which yielded a material of low stacking fault density.
