Microstructural observations and selected-area electron diffraction studies were made of the diffusion-couple interfaces of Ni/Ni3Si and Ni/Ni3Ga. It was observed that the Ni-rich solid solution phase ( grew towards the Ni3Si- or Ni3Ga-based intermetallic phase (’) during diffusion annealing. The same crystallographic orientation relationship existed between the and ’ phases. It was demonstrated that this growth process and its structural features were characteristic of diffusion couples between pure Ni, and Ni-based intermetallics with the L12-type crystal structure.
