The electronic structure of (00•1)-(1 x 1) surfaces was investigated by means of direct and inverse photo-emission spectroscopy. Bulk and surface-sensitive measurements of clean surfaces, and surfaces which had been exposed to O or Cs, demonstrated the existence of filled and empty surface states which extended by more than 1eV beyond the valence- and conduction-band edges. The filled states were tentatively associated with Al dangling bonds or back bonds.
