A quantum mechanical treatment was presented for such effects, in which a simple harmonic model was used for the planar potential that was due to 2 planes that surrounded the channel, and for the corresponding bound states. At the stacking-fault boundary, these states underwent transitions and the associated probabilities were calculated by using the sudden approximation. A general expression for the overlap integral, <n|m>, for arbitrary values of n and m was given here for the first time. It was shown to have a remarkable physical significance, and also reduced the number of analytical calculations (involving Hermite functions) which were required for treating the higher states. The general expression was valid for various stacking shifts. There was also found to be an interesting in-built left-right symmetry which was not clearly reflected by classical descriptions.
