A mathematical model was developed for the formation kinetics of Al2MgO4 spinel. Experiments were carried out, using X-ray diffractometry, at temperatures ranging from 1373 to 1673K. Equimolar powder mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 were used as starting materials. The interdiffusivity values which were deduced from high-temperature X-ray diffraction data, by using the present model, were in good agreement with those which were deduced from diffusion couple experiments. The activation energy for interdiffusion was found to be equal to 354.2kJ/mol at temperatures ranging from 1473 to 1873K.
