The natures of the strain lobes and loops which formed on edge dislocations in yttria-stabilized material in an electron microscope were investigated. By changing the acceleration voltage, cycling the beam intensity, and heating or cooling the specimen before observation, the effects which resulted from beam heating were revealed. During specimen heating, ZrN precipitates which had a large misfit with respect to the ZrO2-Y2O3 matrix formed within compressed regions of the dislocation core.
