A model was developed for predicting diffusion kinetics in finite multi-phase 1-dimensional binary diffusion couples. A mathematical description of diffusion, which was based upon an analytical solution of Fick’s laws, permitted the temporal evolution of the microstructure (number of phases and their thicknesses) to be predicted on the basis of known diffusion coefficients and homogeneity ranges. The diffusion coefficients could also be calculated, for all of the phases of a finite sample, on the basis of the movements of phase boundaries.
