By integrating the interdiffusion flux of a component (with respect to distance) within the diffusion zone of an isothermal solid/solid diffusion couple, the average effective interdiffusion coefficients could be deduced for selected composition ranges. A general method was developed for relating the average effective interdiffusion coefficients, for composition ranges on either side of the Matano plane, to the composition at the Matano plane. The characteristic depths for concentration profiles on either side of the Matano plane were used to characterize the concentration profiles, and their deviations from error function solutions.
