A study was made of grain boundary structures and chemistry, in sintered samples, by using electron microscopy. This involved making quantitative measurements of O/hole contents, cation segregation, and local lattice parameters, by using a 2nm probe. The results clearly demonstrated the applicability of analyses, based upon the constrained coincidence site lattice model, to grain boundaries in a complex non-cubic crystal. It was thus possible to clarify the nature of weakly coupled grain boundaries in this material.
