It was noted that grain boundary pre-melting in thin foils of plastically deformed Cu and Ag bicrystals, and in Cu, Ni and 70-30 brass polycrystals, occurred at relatively low temperatures (approximately half of the bulk melting point). The grain boundary pre-melting temperatures in thin foils of bicrystals whose grain boundary planes were parallel to activated screw dislocations were lower than for active edge dislocations. The pre-melting tended to occur along grain boundaries with high densities of piled-up dislocations.
