A study was made of the reconstruction of the (10•0) surface by calculating electron energy-loss spectra and optical properties. The unreconstructed surface, and 3 different atomic reconstructions, were considered. It was shown that the optical properties were very sensitive to the atomic reconstruction. The results were explained in terms of differential electron energy-loss spectra that would permit comparison with experiment. Experiments were proposed for the unambiguous determination of the reconstruction of this important surface.
