The fundamental diffusion mechanism in proton-conducting perovskites was studied simultaneously in space and time by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering. It was deduced that proton diffusion involved a sequence of trapping and free diffusion events. The free diffusion involved the Grotthus mechanism; including very rapid rotations around O ions.
