Solid solutions of the form: Ce1-xBixO2, where x was between 0 and 0.30, were prepared hydrothermally and the structures and ionic conductivities were investigated. The uniform small particle size (25 to 50nm) permitted the samples to be sintered at 900 to 1300C to give dense ceramic pellets. The solubility limit of Bi2O3 in CeO2 was determined to be about 20mol%. The maximum conductivity, of about 0.01S/cm at 600C, with E = 1.01eV, was found for x = 0.20.
