Electron spin resonance studies were made of crushed quartz. The results indicated the formation of a new type of E’ center by ultra-violet irradiation. Also, the concentration of E’ centers which was produced by the -irradiation of crushed quartz was reduced by ultra-violet irradiation. It was found to be possible to distinguish 3 types of E’ center that were produced by the ultra-violet irradiation of crushed quartz. These were Ec’, which were formed simply by crushing; Euv’, which were formed by crushing and ultra-violet irradiation; and E’, which were formed by crushing and -irradiation. The distribution of the activation energies of the E’ centers just after crushing was revealed by annealing experiments and computer simulation.
