Non-stoichiometric single-phase Fe1-xO films, with ferrimagnetic properties, large saturation magnetizations and low-temperature coercivity, were studied. A model was proposed for the relationship between saturation magnetization and lattice parameter. The model was based upon the existence of 16:5 spinel-type defect clusters, and predicted a linear dependence of saturation magnetization upon lattice parameter. The experimental data gave a straight line which passed through the saturation magnetization and lattice parameter coordinates of bulk Fe3O4. This suggested that Fe1-xO was a link between Fe3O4 and FeO; materials which seemed to have different physical properties.
