It was recalled that grain boundary melting, and visible grain boundary dislocations, had been studied experimentally in = 5 <100> twist boundaries and = 5 <100> symmetrical tilt boundaries of Al, with (310) parallel to the boundary plane, at homologous temperatures which ranged from 0.89 to 0.92. Partial melting of the specimen had occurred during further heating. It was concluded that these results were in clear disagreement with calculations which had predicted a rapid onset of extensive disordering at homologous temperatures which were as low as 0.7. Molecular dynamics simulations were used here to check for the possible existence of a grain boundary disordering transition of melting type, below the melting point, in an Al bicrystal with a = 5 (100) twist boundary during heating from 300K to almost the melting point.
