A new method was presented for the numerical simulation of diffusion in the presence of a phase change. The method was designed to allow for hysteresis and finite-rate kinetics in phase-change reactions, since such phenomena were frequent in solid-solid phase transitions. The method was applied to H migration and hydride precipitation in Zr and its alloys. It was noted that the present method was the first one to incorporate an implicit treatment of diffusion; thus avoiding mesh-dependent stability limits on the time step.
