High-resolution transmission electron microscopic images of decagonal quasicrystals were studied. This revealed the existence of a phason-related stacking disorder along the periodic 10-fold axis. The image contrast within hexagon-shaped tiles exhibited an inner vertex only if no phason defect was present. This interpretation of the high-resolution micrographs was confirmed by electron microscopic image simulations that were based upon a realistic structural model.
