A theoretical investigation was made of the electromigration wind force for adatom migration in various migrator-substrate systems. The electronic structure of the substrate was treated by using the layer Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. This permitted an examination not only of the general diffusion bias of the migrating ion, but also of the variation in wind force between adsorption sites. The results were interpreted in terms of a ballistic model for the wind force.
