A new luminescence band at 4.85eV was discovered in Li-doped crystals which had been subjected to mechanical deformation and irradiation. The luminescence was attributed to the radiative decay of electronic excitations which were localized near to interstitial ions, Lii+. The spectrum of Lii+ production by vacuum ultra-violet radiation at 4.2K was determined. The production mechanism of cationic Frenkel defects which accompanied the dissociation of excitons that were localized near to Li ions was considered.
