By using Monte Carlo methods, calculations were made of the effects of Al and O ions with energies that simulated the expected recoil energy levels in alumina. The recoil energies were assumed to range from 100eV to 10MeV. In addition, recoil energy spectra for Al and O were calculated for 1 and 14MeV neutrons. By combining the results of the various calculations, it was possible to determine the numbers of Al and O vacancies that were created in alumina by neutrons with a given energy.
