A surface X-ray diffraction investigation was made of the effect of In upon the homo-epitaxial growth of Cu(111). At temperatures ranging from 125 to 300K, growth on clean Cu occurred in a 3-dimensional manner; with the creation of twin crystallites over a small fraction of the total surface area. When the surface had previously been covered with a sub-monolayer of In, layer-by-layer growth was encouraged and the formation of twin crystallites was suppressed.
