The incorporation of La3+ into the lattices of samples with various compositions was studied by means of electron-probe micro-analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffractometry. The direct determination of solid-solution formulae by means of micro-analysis supported a structural model which involved 2 solid solutions with La3+ on Ba2+ sites, and a deficient Ti4+ sub-lattice, regardless of the starting composition. The solid solution extended along a tie-line which went from BaTiO3 to La4Ti3O12 to a composition of roughly Ba0.70La0.30Ti0.925(VTi””)0.075O3.
