Research on defect control and defect engineering in ion-implanted crystals was reviewed, with especial regard to the intrinsic limitations of ion-doping, to the specific structures which were produced by high-energy ion tracks and to diamond-graphite heterostructures which were formed under irradiation damage that was heavy enough to cause the conversion of metastable diamond into stable graphite.
