It was noted that the main part of the line energy of dislocations in solids could be described by elastic continuum theory (linear, non-linear, non-local). However, there remained a core part which had to be treated atomistically. On the basis of dimensional arguments it was shown that, regardless of the interatomic potential and the core configuration, there existed a unique correlation between the elastic energy and the atomic misfit energy. This resulted from the fact that the displacements were coupled to the asymptotic field of a singular dislocation.
