An optical investigation was made of the Zeeman behavior of the deep Fe acceptor in GaN which had been grown on 6H-SiC. The characteristic ground-state splitting of a near-infrared luminescence transition at 1.2988eV could be unambiguously attributed to Fe3+, as previously proposed on the basis of optically detected magnetic resonance results. The observed luminescence lifetime of 8ms, as well as the fine structure of the excited state, were consistent with a 4T1(G)-6A1(S) transition.
