The effect of 60Co γ-irradiation upon the electron spin resonance, absorption and thermoluminescence of single crystals which were undoped, or doped with Nd- ions, were investigated. A radiation defect which was related to the shifting of a short-wave absorption edge was described. The results could be explained by assuming that a Gd3+ ion captured the electron which was knocked from an O2- ion, and formed a Gd3+ paramagnetic centre.
