A model was proposed in an attempt to explain the polytype orderings in such crystals. The basic assumptions which were made by the model were that the point defects played the main role in polytype formation, and influenced the configuration (hexagonal or cubic) of individual layers. The defects had a tendency to order themselves into superlattices, and this acted selectively on particular stackings of the layer sequences. The model was applied to experimental data on materials such as SiC and AIIBVI compounds.
