Al5Lu3O12, Al5Sm3O12, Al5Tb3O12, Al5Tm3O12, Al5Y3O12, Al5Yb3O12: Point Defects
Thermodynamic and crystallographic analyses were made of these materials and their solid solutions. It was found that the garnets contained cationic defects and O vacancies. Thus, in Al garnets, [AlVI+] formed at octahedral sites. In the case of Ga garnets, and Ga-containing solid solutions, there were Ga vacancies of the form, [VIGa], at octahedral sites. In Dy3(Ga,Al)5O12 solid solutions, substitutional defects (GaIV3+) and [AlVI3+] were present in addition to the above-mentioned defects. The Ga3+ ions preferentially occupied octahedral sites.
