A theoretical study was made of the intersection of a moving edge dislocation with an isolated wedge disclination or with a quadrupole of wedge disclinations. It was shown that, when a moving dislocation had intersected a disclination configuration, a force appeared which hindered dislocation motion. By using elasticity theory, exact expressions were found for the forces which hindered a dislocation that intersected an isolated disclination or disclination quadrupole. By using these expressions, the flow stress for a metallic glass in an inhomogeneous deformation regime was estimated, as well as the energies of elastic short-range distortions in metallic glasses.
