The plastic deformation of icosahedral single quasicrystals was studied by performing in situ straining experiments in a high-voltage electron microscope at high temperatures. The results provided the first direct evidence for dislocation motion in quasicrystals. The dislocation velocity, for an applied stress of 390MPa, was found to be 7 x 10-7m/s. It was observed that the dislocation motion took place in planes which were perpendicular to 3-fold and 5-fold lattice directions.
