A study was made of quasi-elastic broadening of the 57Fe Mössbauer resonance in this intermetallic compound in order to determine the diffusion jump mechanism of Fe atoms. From the angular dependence of the line broadening relative to an oriented single crystal, it was deduced that the Fe atoms jumped to various neighboring sites on the Fe sub-lattice. However, the jump was not a direct one but rather a combination of a jump into a nearest-neighbor vacancy, which led to short-term occupation of an anti-structure site on the Al sub-lattice, plus a jump into a vacancy which was back on the Fe sub-lattice.
