The effect of diffusion upon the formation of self-assembled quantum dots was studied. Two types of diffusion were observed during the growth of a layer. The occurrence of surface diffusion was confirmed by means of atomic force microscopy. The occurrence of interdiffusion was verified by photoluminescence and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was suggested that the surface diffusion might help to form quantum dots. However, interdiffusion might prevent the formation of quantum dots.
