The multiplication of edge dislocations in impurity atmospheres was considered. Impurities pinned a dislocation line so that an additional stress had to be applied in order to drive a multiplication mechanism. An expression was derived for the diffusional redistribution of impurity atoms, along a dislocation segment, due to a non-uniform chemical potential.
