A new method, which had been developed in order to examine the structures and properties of the cores of grain boundaries, was used to study segregates which were localized in 2 discrete regions of polycrystals: that is, the cores of grain boundaries, and 2-dimensional regions of the lattice adjacent to the grain boundaries. An investigation was made here of the segregation of 57Co atomic probes in the cores of grain boundaries in d-transition metals. The interaction of 57Co atomic probes with grain boundary cores in such metals was found to be similar to their interaction with vacancies, because the grain boundary cores were characterized, like vacancies in metals, by an excess volume and a negative charge. The grain boundaries were here enriched with 57Co and the activation enthalpy of 57Co atomic probe segregation at the grain boundaries was proportional to the local magnetic moment of the 57Co atomic probes.
