Variations in stress as a function of cycle number were measured during the early stages of fatigue for various strain amplitudes, at room temperature, for 2 single crystals having differing orientations. The corresponding dislocation configurations were observed by means of transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the curves of stress versus cycle number, and the dislocation configurations which developed during fatigue, were different for the 2 orientations. The results were explained in terms of dislocation-slip geometry.
