An atomic force microscopic study was made of the topography of grain-boundary thermal grooves in Ni-rich samples. It was demonstrated that the shape of the grooves was modified by grain boundary sliding and surface faceting. A quantitative theory was developed, for the grooving, which took account of the latter phenomena.
