It was pointed out that self-diffusion in intermetallic alloys had been successfully studied in compounds, which contained strong incoherent scatterers (Ni, Co), by means of QENS. It was noted here that the range of accessible compounds could be markedly widened by using coherent scattering. A coherent scattering function was derived for self-diffusion via vacancies in intermetallic alloys, and it was suggested how coherent scattering could be used for diffusion studies and how the coherent background in incoherent experiments on intermetallic alloys could be taken into account.
